At the age of nineteen, Dara Schindelka walked away from the biggest stages in the Canadian musical theatre world. She is back performing, but this time it is her own stories and songs. Dara’s music mixes hippie anthems with deep roots. Sara Bareilles, Laura Marling, Joni Mitchell, Marc Cohn, Coco Love Alcorn, & Mary Chapin Carpenter all inspire her unique perspective on the unpredictable journey of life. Dara lives in northern Saskatchewan, Canada, on the shores of Lac La Ronge. Her music is influenced by both the issues and the beauty of the north as well as the prairie roots where she was raised in southern Saskatchewan.
Her debut EP has already won awards for the best folk/roots track of March 2020 with the American Tracks Music Awards and will be featured at the Love Wins Festival in New York in 2021. Her music has been featured in the Women of Substance Podcast twice in the last year. All this and she only started this journey in July of 2019! She was to be showcasing at the Saskatchewan Country Music Awards, had main stage slots at the Napatak Ramble and Country at the Creek Music Festivals, and was booked to tour from Ontario to British Columbia this year before the world fell to COVID 19.
She is not letting that slow her down. Her focus has pivoted to online opportunities and she has had a live stream concert sponsored by FemFolk out of the United Kingdom as well as a Saskatchewan Food Bank Fundraiser with artists from across the province. She is already gaining radio airplay on community and public radio with this inspirational song for our time. ‘Love Lives Here’ was written as a dedication to her sons as they moved into a new home and new life together. Dara wrote this only 9 months ago as a message to all of us who desire love as the focus in our home. Now, more than ever, this song is needed.
